it's a West African... ideogram I think is the word -- from that book by Robert Farris Thompson, Flash of the Spirit: African & Afro-American Art & Philosophy -- it has something to do with the afterlife as I recall
actually if it is a Kongo-style 'cosmogram' then that would make it an ancestor for the Vévé right
