Magpie terrified me as a kid. The [now excellent] theme, the aggressive magpie character, the name TONY BASTABLE and Mick Robertson's perm all played a part - seriously, there's an ugly, puff-cheeked, bowel-squeezing *thing* linking them together; aggressive exertion by lardy blokes. See also Bully Beef in The Dandy. Glad to see you making The Goodies link too :)

haha. i think you must have been a bit younger than me. i don't remember being troubled by Magpie.

i was surprised there are no How episodes on YouTube. i don't remember the theme having been so electronic, i just remembered the ersatz Native American rhythm. But the show was good, especially Jack Hargreaves in his shed. Or was that a later show?

i looked in a vain for a later version of that Goodies theme that was on YouTube a while ago and has now vaporized - really quite heavy grinding funk-rock, on a par with Rufus "Tell Me Something Good"

Ah, Jack Hargreaves was in it but his shed prog was 'Out of Town'. Lovely theme to that, too, but not at all heavy (although there is a weight to it). This is 'Old Country' but uses the same theme:

Classical Spanish guitar, so it triggers memories of the clock counting down to TV For Schools.
